Who can donate?

Egg donors are healthy and should be aged between 18 and 33. It is important that you periods are normal as this indicates normal hormone levels and you Body Mass Index (BMI) level must not exceed 32. There must be no personal history of sexually transmitted infections and there should be no personal or family history of inheritable diseases.

Is my own fertility affected?

Highly unlikely and your health is our priority throughout your treatment.

Will the treatment be painful?

Every woman´s experience is different but majority of donors find that the process is quite straight forward and no worse than any minor invasive procedure.

What information is the recipient given about me?

Only non-identifying information is given to a recipient such as your physical characteristics, age and blood group aswell as your occupation and hobbies.

What information can I have about the recipients?

By Spanish law you are not given any information about your recipients to ensure that your donation is and stays anonymous and therefore all parties are protected.

How does the process start?

Firstly we would ask you to fill in the online registration form and submit to us. We will review all the information you give and then contact you to let you know if you have been provisionally accepted as a donor.

We will then plan your first visit to us in Spain and flights booked on your behalf. This is normally done as a day visit with a flight leaving the UK early in the morning and returning you to the UK the same day. You will normally be offered a choice of dates by our team responsible for your travel arrangements. You will be collected from the airport and returned there in time for your flight home. Some women may want to combine their visit to us with a short break which we are very happy for you to do but any expenses other than travel will not be covered by the clinic. We do know of hotels close to the clinic where you can stay for a reasonable cost and this can be discussed at the time of your appointment being booked.

At this appointment you will be seen by one of our co-ordinators who will talk through your application form with you and discuss the treatment process in detail, also demonstrating how you can inject yourself with the medications necessary for the treatment. A blood sample will be taken for virology screening and other tests necessary for donation. You will then be seen by our consultant, Dr Benito who will also talk to you about the treatment and perform a vaginal ultrasound scan on you to assess your ovaries and uterus.

How does the actual treatment happen?

Once all the blood tests are back and we are able to accept you as a donor, we will match you with recipients from our waiting list. Yours and their cycles will be co-ordinated and treatment dates planned. We will confirm the dates with you at this point to ensure that you are free to come out to Spain at the required time. The treatment involves a series of injections which you will administer yourself to stimulate your ovaries to make more than the normal one or two follicles. It is in the follicles that the eggs are with one egg found in most follicles. You will have scans to monitor your progress so that we can ensure you are on the correct medication dosage. Donors normally produce between 6 and 16 eggs. Once we can see that your follicles are of the correct size you will then have a late night injection to ready the eggs in the follicles before egg collection. The egg collection is done under an anaesthetic and takes about 20 minutes. You will not be aware of the process taking place. You are normally discharged from the clinic about an hour after you come out of theatre though you should rest for the remainder of the day. Over the counter painkillers are all that you should need following egg collection though many women do not need any pain relief.

When do I come out to Spain?

Depending on where you live and your own preference, some donors will have the monitoring scans done in the UK and then once ready for egg collection will come out to Spain for a 2 night visit (the night before and after the egg collection). Other donors who would like to come out for a longer visit can have their first monitoring scan done in the UK and if an adequate response is seen then come out to Spain for a visit of 5 nights. The rest of the monitoring scans would then be done at the clinic and other than when you are needed there you would be free to enjoy being a tourist in this lovely part of the country.

Would I have to pay for my flights and accommodation?

No, flights for both visits and accommodation whether for 2 or 4 nights would be paid for by the clinic. Any other expenses such as meals would not. By law we are able to give donors a compensation for what you go through and you will be given this when we discharge you from the clinic on the day of your egg collection.

Can I talk to someone further before filling on the online form?

Yes, our co-ordinators, Ruth and Fiona are more than happy to answer any questions you may have either over the phone or by e-mail.

Please remember to fill in this form and send it back to us through email. Click here to download.
